More Green, Longer: Houseplants That Thrive Beyond Summer

When the garden goes quiet in October, houseplants carry the green indoors. The trick is choosing plants that put up with short days and dry furnace air.

Low-light favorites

Snake plants, ZZ plants and pothos tolerate dim corners and missed waterings. They're a good fit for a north-facing room or an office.

Plants that like a sunny window

Jade plants, aloe and many succulents do well in a south-facing window through winter. Water them sparingly while growth slows.

Fight the dry air

Group plants together, use a pebble tray with water, or run a humidifier. Ferns and calatheas especially appreciate the extra moisture.

Water less in winter

Most houseplants need much less water when days are short. Check the soil with a finger before watering, and let it dry out between drinks.
